We’ll start by reviewing the evolution of the vision from its roots in AI research through the early days of the Web and more recent developments such as Web Services and Web 2.0.

Web 2.0 refers to the spate of recent Web innovations that you’ve no doubt heard about in the popular press – blogs, wikis, social networks and the like. These innovations are important building blocks for Internet-scale knowledge systems.

Because many of you may not be familiar with these developments, I’m going to take you on a brief tour of Web 2.0 from an AI-er’s perspective, looking both at the potential role of Web 2.0 technologies and methodologies in building AI systems, as well as how AI can contribute to enhancing Web 2.0.

We’ll then demonstrate through several case studies, both visionary and real, how we can leverage Web 2.0 developments to realize our vision of Internet-scale knowledge systems.

Finally, we’ll conclude with a call for action for realizing the vision.
