We built several research prototypes of such agent-based collaborative engineering systems during the late 1980’s. The most impressive was PACT (standing for Palo Alto Collaborative Testbed), which was documented in the January 1992 issue of IEEE computer.

PACT used the Net to link four independently developed knowledge-based design systems (covering requirements management, kinematics, dynamics, and electronics) at three different organizations – EIT, Lockheed and Stanford. The systems then collaborated on the design of a small robotic manipulator. (Rao Kambhampatri, the Co-Chair of this year's AAAI program worked on PACT while a post-doc at Stanford.)
