Perhaps most importantly, Web 2.0 is a social phenomena. Progress often starts with a simple but useful idea which survives by getting it out quickly for others to refine and embellish. The process has come to be known as mass collaboration - thousands of individuals, building incrementally upon each other’s work.

I’ve highlighted in red the Web 2.0 concepts that are most important to realizing our vision. Because some of them may not be familiar to you, I’m going to take you on a brief tour of these Web 2.0 concepts, from an AI-er’s perspective. I’ll cover both their potential as building blocks for Internet-scale knowledge systems, as well as AI research opportunities for enhancing their functionality.

We’ll organize the tour around the four highlighted Web 2.0 themes, beginning with making the Web more participatory.
