In a world of 12M+ blogs, the real problem is getting noticed. An individual with a browser can at best regularly track a couple of dozen sites for updates. The real breakthrough responsible for the popularity of blogs is Really Simple Syndication (RSS).

RSS defines an XML format for providing information about new content added to a website, such as the title, link and a short description of a blog posting or news item. An individual can periodically ping a site’s RSS feed to quickly see if anything has changed since their last visit.
