The tags assigned to the image in the previous slide were contributed by many different users of Flickr, a collaborative photo tagging site recently purchased by Yahoo. Useful tags stick. Popular tags get reused, and thus reinforced, because people want their content to be found. Frequently co-occuring tags, such as "china" and "beijing", provide an opportunity to infer relationships (causal, structural, geographical, etc.).
