For example, from the collection of tags assigned to Chef Chu’s Website and thousands of other restaurant sites, it should be possible to infer that Chef Chu’s is a restaurant, that restaurants serve lunch and dinner, that Guang-Zhou is a city in China, and so forth.

Even if we are unable automatically to derive ontologies from folksonomies, we can certainly map folksonomies onto existing knowledge trees and use their structure to make helpful inferences. For example, we could infer that Chef Chu’s was a restaurant in China, even though “china” did not appear explicitly as a tag for Chef Chu’s Web page. A little knowledge can go a long way in increasing the usefulness of tags.
